The “Opportunity”

“Opportunity” (NCKW-2) - like the Mars rover - is a "Rob Roy" style, covered canoe. At 12' 6" tip to tip, this all Cedar boat will carry the more experienced paddler, and a significant amount of gear, everywhere.

Stems: Ash (from West Penn Hardwoods)

Hull: Cedar (locally sourced NC Barn Post)

The Build.

Post was 12" x 12" x 8'. We chainsaw milled into 1 1/2" thick slabs, and then ripped the slabs into 1/4" thick sticks. I am involved in every step of this process. Oversized cockpit (42 x 22 1/2) features a custom seat with fold-down seat back. Purpleheart combing.

My inspiration for this boat was a dear friend, who had recently lost his wife. When a man loses his everything, where does he turn? To Mother (Nature). This was a design for Joe. This is a hybrid that floats in almost no water, if you're trekking, and is "playful" in the lake!
